Gløgg is the Scandinavian version of "mulled wine" or "glühwein", meaning warm, spiced wine. The drink has a long history. In the Middle Ages, it was called "Ypocras" or "Hipocras" after the Greek physician Hippocrates.

It was considered a very healthful drink that would help against a number of diseases, especially good for digestion and help against winter depression. In the 17th century, the French began to serve warm cognac with melted sugar. Later, cognac was replaced with wine. In the German castles, people also heated red wine, added various spices and drank "glühwein". The drink spread in the following years to several European countries, including Sweden and Denmark.

In Scandinavia, mulled wine has been drunk at least since the 17th century, probably earlier. Wine was considered both healthy and health-giving, and when the Swedish national hero Gustav Vasa expressed great enthusiasm for mulled wine, it also gave this drink considerable prestige. His own favorite was in particular demand, a mixture of red wine, sugar, honey, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves. The word gløgg appeared in the 17th century, and the drink later also became more widespread.
